The medicalcoder R package is now at version 0.10.0. This release expands the package’s ICD code coverage, updates its data-building workflow, and includes a correction to an Elixhauser method name. Version 0.10.0 has been accepted by CRAN, and is also available from GitHub.

What’s new

  • FY2027 ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS: Add the latest CMS code files. The corresponding CDC-hosted FY2027 CM order file agrees with CMS; the cdc source label remains reserved for mortality codes.
  • ICD-10-AM: Extend Australian Modification code coverage through financial year 2027 using the current Thirteenth Edition.
  • AHRQ Elixhauser ICD-10 mappings: Preserve codes across supported annual releases in elixhauser_ahrq_icd10, since this method does not take an encounter year or quarter to select one release.
  • Data and build fixes: Select the intended CMS source archives, correct affected FY2026 code validity, and repair recursive build dependencies so importer and source changes propagate to generated package data.
  • POA consistency check: Add a build-time check that mapped, assignable ICD-10 codes keep the same present-on-admission exemption status across supported AHRQ releases.

Breaking change

The Elixhauser method name is corrected from elixhauser_elixhauser1988 to elixhauser_elixhauser1998. Update code that selects this method in lookup tables returned by get_elixhauser_codes() and get_elixhauser_index_scores(). Calls to comorbidities(method = "elixhauser_elixhauser1988") remain temporarily supported and produce a deprecation warning.

This release also adds a CITATION file citing the JAMIA Open article, and organizes the test suite into attached, unattached, and extended groups. Extended tests can be run with make check-extended.
